Maintaining a Healthy Diet During Social Events

eating outAs a society who celebrates most of our occasions with food, maintaining a healthy diet can be a difficult task. Nobody wants to keep their diet in mind when plates of delicious foods are being passed around in front of you. While it may be difficult to keep a diet in mind, you likely do not want to lose everything that you worked for either. Here are a few helpful tips that can keep you on track without having to give up the best part of social events.

Avoid Portion Distortion

With the wide variety of foods available for you to browse from at many social events, it is easy for your eyes to become bigger than your stomach. Rather than taking the largest plate and loading up on your favorite foods, look for a smaller plate. The smaller plate tricks your eyes into believing that you have more food than what is actually there. Select a small amount of your favorite foods, and slowly eat what you have. You will always be able to go back for seconds if you are truly hungry after finishing the first plate.

Keep It Lean

Take inventory on the food options you have prior to making your choices. Depending on the type of diet you are following, you will need to avoid certain foods. For those who are on a low carb diet, then you will want to avoid any starchy products like potatoes and gravy. Dieters who have opted for a low calorie diet will want to choose lean, white, meats as opposed to dark meat. Any dieter can benefit from added vegetables to their diet, so try to add some extra vegetables to your plate to replace the smaller meat and carbohydrate portions.

Do Not Deny Yourself

Many dieters restrict themselves too much in an attempt to lose weight. You want to enjoy yourself at social events, not torture yourself by staring at delicious options only to have to turn them away. If you feel that you really want a dessert or other food option that is restricted in your diet, then go ahead. The key thing is to enjoy these treats in moderation. Dieters who restrict themselves too much find their diets sap enjoyment from their lives and are more likely to binge on the foods they denied themselves when their willpower finally caves.

Do Not Overload Yourself

There are multiple holidays throughout the year that are focused on food in addition to the many “just because” social events that people enjoy. Christmas and Thanksgiving are the most infamous holidays for having amazing, heartwarming, and diet-ruining food. While you want to enjoy the time that you have with friends and family, do not overload your schedule. By doing so, you can make yourself feel obligated to consume foods you normally would avoid during your diet. Instead of scheduling visits during meal times, talk with your friends and family to see what their schedule is and offer to meet with them when a meal is not being served. They will understand you have other obligations to maintain.

Dieting during the social events does not have to be a chore. With a little extra work and attention to detail, you can enjoy great food without destroying your diet.
